Do I need to carry my passport?

Last updated on April 1, 2026

Yes. It is a legal requirement to carry ID with you at all times while in Italy. For non-EU citizens this means a valid passport. You’ll need it for identification purposes, especially if you plan to travel between different cities or regions and at major sites like the Colosseum. While you don’t need to show it at every turn, having it on hand is advisable in case of emergencies, security checks, or if you need to verify your identity. It's best to keep a photo and/or digital copy of your passport with you as well, in case it gets lost or stolen. Just remember to store your passport safely, perhaps in a money belt or a secure travel pouch. Enjoy your trip!
