Do I need to speak Italian when I am in Italy?

English is widely spoken in Italy's major tourist areas such as Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan, the Amalfi Coast, Tuscany and Cinque Terre. However as you venture away from these areas, fluent spoken English is less common. Regardless, we strongly recommend learning a few words of Italian before your trip. Taking part in a conversation with a local is all part of the experience when you are visiting Italy and it is a beautiful language.
