Have you ever considered visiting Italy in February? If so, this is the perfect opportunity to get clued up on everything you need to know: weather, attractions, what to pack, and more.

February is one of the best times to visit Italy. It’s a time to embrace the romantic atmosphere as the country lights up with Carnival and Valentine’s Day celebrations. Not to mention, the cities are quieter, and the crowds are thinner. This means lower prices on hotels and airfare are on the cards.

During this month, the country is still experiencing winter weather, with cooler temperatures in northern cities and milder temperatures in southern and central Italy. It’s an excellent time to be near the mountainous regions like the Alps and the Dolomites for fantastic skiing. February falls in the high season for winter sports, so the ski resorts will be busy.

With far fewer tourists around – the coasts, lakes, and countryside are bustling with other Europeans on vacation. Lastly, some businesses and restaurants may close over winter, so be prepared for these conditions.

Weather in Italy in February

february in italy

What is Italy like in February? February falls in Italy’s winter season, so expect cold to milder temperatures. However, it is a vast country with various weather conditions depending on where you are.

Is Italy cold in February? It depends. The northern regions experience colder temperatures, averaging around 37°F (3°C) to 48°F (9°C), in cities like Venice and Milan. In contrast, in the southern regions, Rome, Sardinia, and Sicily experience a marginally warmer climate, reaching up to 63°F (17°C).

In terms of rainfall, it is relatively common in February. The average precipitation ranges between two inches (50mm) to four inches (100mm) throughout the country. These moderately wet and damp weather conditions discourage most people from traveling to Italy in February.

But with the rain comes affordability. This month is ideal for the budget-conscious traveler since this is the low season (from November to February). Finally, the Alps and Dolomites in northern Italy experience heavy snowfall during winter months from December through February.

Here’s a closer look at what to expect from the weather and temperatures in some of the most prominent areas:

  • Rome Weather in February: February is a lovely time to wander around Rome. Expect the daily temperatures to hover around 46.4°F (8°C), averaging between 37-57°F (3-14°C). The city is no stranger to occasional heavy downpours during this time, with an average of seven rainy days or 2.4 inches (60mm). Otherwise, the weather is mild overall and perfect for sightseeing.
  • Florence Weather in February: Florence offers cold to mild temperatures from lows of 37°F (3°C) to highs of about 54°F (12°C). Overall, the weather is cold and damp as the city begins to thaw, with lots of rainfall throughout the month (five to seven days or 2.5 inches).
  • Venice Weather in February: Thanks to the Carnival, February is the absolute best time to visit Venice (more on this later). Venice is a bit colder than most other cities, with daily averages as low as 34°F (1°C), reaching only up to 48°F (9°C) as its peak temperature. Be prepared for about nine days of rainfall or two inches (50mm).
  • Tuscany Weather in February: In Tuscany, the mornings and evenings tend to be chilly, regularly dropping below freezing. Daytime temperatures occasionally reach 59°F (15°C) on warmer days, but it’s generally nippy. The average daily temperature ranges from 41°F (5°C) to 54°F (12°C) with about ten days of rainfall, or 2.7 inches (70mm).
  • Amalfi Coast Weather in February: Moving on to the Amalfi Coast, the average daily temperature in February is usually between 48-57°F (9-14°C). Though not the warmest for this destination, it’s still a great time to relish the coastal scenery without the swarm of tourists. The region receives a high average rainfall of around 12 days or 4.3 inches (110mm).
  • Italian Lakes Weather in February: Lake Como is a winter wonderland in February and a chance to enjoy the last bit of snow. Take part in fun winter sports without the hordes of tourists. Expect the temperatures to be between 37-46°F (3-8°C). Although known as a summer destination, Lake Garda is another magical winter location where you can enjoy fewer crowds and outdoor adventures. While chilly, the skies are often clear and blue, with average daily temperatures between 32-48°F (0-9°C).
  • Cinque Terre Weather in February: The uncrowded paths and lack of summer heat are pros when visiting Cinque Terre this month. However, it may not be the greatest time to go swimming, boating, and hiking, as it’s too cold and too wet for trails to be open. Therefore, visiting the Cinque Terre villages is better, especially if you’re lucky to have a sunny day. Otherwise, expect cool temperatures from 41-54°F (5-12°C) and about 11 days of rainfall, or around 4.6 inches (119 mm).
  • Sicily Weather in February: Sicily is one of the warmest cities, with temperatures ranging from 50-59°F (10-15°C). It also receives some of the lowest rainfall amounts, averaging 2.2 inches (56mm). It’s still a lovely time to visit Sicily for non-stop sightseeing.

Oh, Venice. A dreamy city that floats on water with romantic gondola rides meandering through canals. Lined with Renaissance and Gothic palaces and endless bridges, it’s a sight to behold. That said, it can get extremely cramped during high season. As for February, Venice is all yours to explore.

The one exception, though, is Carnival week. This is the city’s most important and traditional yearly event, so there’s no avoiding the crowds. You can join the Carnival or plan around it, but remember that hotel prices will skyrocket this week.

Wrap up because Venice gets pretty cold in February, averaging 34°F (1°C) to 48°F (9°C) daily. But at least you won’t run out of breathtaking sights, such as Rialto Bridge, St. Mark’s Square, Doge’s Palace, and Saint Mark’s Basilica.

February is a superb month to visit Sicily. This is when the almond blossoms begin to sprout, signaling the end of winter and the arrival of spring. Imagine the blossoming tiny white buds of almond trees in the south and snow-covered peaks to the north.

It contrasts the dazzling beaches and waters during summer months but allows you to see Sicily’s main sights without fighting the scorching heat. The average daily temperature is warmer than in other cities, between 50-59°F (10-15°C).

Like Venice, you won’t beat the crowds thoroughly as the Festival of Saint Agatha takes place in the first week of February. But after that, things should be back to normal.

So, what to see? Start by exploring all the stellar historical sights, including the Valley of the Temples, Palermo Cathedral, and Teatro Antico di Taormina. Palermo is a magnificent city to explore, and hiking up Mount Etna is highly recommended.

Festivities and Public Holidays in Italy in February

festivals february italy weather

Late February to early March is Italy’s most prosperous period. It’s the time of the Carnevale! This is an extremely happy and festive time for the country, filled with religious events leading up to Easter.

This celebration usually lasts for two weeks before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday – when Catholics go without something they enjoy for 40 days and 40 nights. The biggest event on the Carnevale calendar is ‘Martedi Grasso’ or Mardi Gras in English, which takes place in March. Here is more insight on festivals and major holidays to look out for in February:

  • February 3 – Saint Biagio Day: The feast day of Armenian San Biagio (Saint Blaise), Saint Biagio is celebrated every year with a festival known as the Benedizione della Gola or ‘blessing of the throat’. The Saint’s fame stems from an incident where he saved a boy from choking on a fish bone. Ever since, he’s been the patron saint of throat afflictions or the healer of throat diseases. In Milan, the Saint is honored with a tradition of eating ‘panettone di San Biagio,’ or rather the last piece.
  • February 3-5 – Festival of Saint Agatha (Festa di Sant’Agata): This is the most significant religious festival in Catania, Sicily. Visit Sicily in February for a wonderful time and to commemorate the life of the city’s patron saint, Agatha of Sicily. It’s truly an Italian masterpiece full of music and color with thousands of pilgrims, devotees, and tourists crowding the streets for the processions.
  • February 14 – Valentine’s Day: In Italy, Valentine’s Day is more than simply exchanging roses and gifts between lovers. Known locally as La Festa Degli Innamorati, it’s a celebration honoring Saint Valentine, the patron saint of many villages.
  • February 15 – Saint Faustino’s Day: After the couples have their moment, it’s time for the singles to shine the next day. Known as the feast of San Faustino, or simply “Single’s Day,” it is the semi-official celebration of singledom. Faustino and his brother Giovita were martyred in the second century, later becoming the patron saint of single people.
  • February 22 – March 4 (likely in 2025) –  Venice Carnival (Carnevale di Venezia): The iconic Venice Carnival is one of the most famous carnival celebrations in the world. This festival dates back to 1094, making Venice the first place to celebrate the Carnival. It’s an otherworldly experience as the people dress up in elaborate costumes and masks. Take part in organized parades and dig into tantalizing Cicchetti (a typical Venetian finger food) and Italian charcuterie, among other local specialties.
  • February (every Saturday/Sunday) – Viareggio Carnival: Hosted in the seaside city of Viareggio, Tuscany, this is a once-in-a-lifetime celebration you don’t want to miss. This festival is held on four Saturdays/Sundays across the month, including one on Fat Thursday and another on Fat Tuesday. It features a grand parade that draws thousands of visitors to witness the spectacular floats. Soak up the festive air and enjoy the costumes, music, and dancing.

Before you start packing, it’s important to know where in Italy you’re going and what you’ll be doing there. This will help you tremendously since each region and city varies slightly regarding weather and temperatures.

Go for warmer layers, thick, insulated jackets/coats, cozy boots, and winter accessories in parts like Lake Como or Lake Garda and near the mountainous regions where it tends to snow. • Comfortable walking or hiking trainers and sandals – Trips to Italy often involve lots of walking, so wear sturdy shoes.
  • Sunhat and sunglasses – Clear skies and sunshine remain common throughout February, regardless of the cooler temperatures and occasional rain. Protect your eyes from harmful UV rays by wearing a hat and sunglasses.
  • Warm boots and a thick winter jacket – In February, the nights can get icy cold, so pack these essential winter items to keep warm. Also, these are a must if you’re visiting snowy areas like Lake Garda or the Dolomites.
  • Sweaters, scarves, and woolen hats – For the same reasons above – to keep you warm during Italy’s winter season.
  • Raincoat –  This one is a no-brainer since it rains quite a bit in many cities throughout February.
