After more than 30 trips to Italy, I have arrived into Fiumicino airport more times than I can count, in every season, with every combination of luggage and travel companions you can imagine. The right Rome airport transfer makes the difference between starting your trip relaxed or starting it frazzled. This guide covers every option for getting from Fiumicino airport to Rome and from Ciampino airport to Rome, with current 2026 fares, timetables, and the practical advice that comes from doing it again and again.

Most international travelers arrive at Fiumicino, also called Leonardo da Vinci airport. We start there. Ciampino, the smaller airport mostly used by Ryanair and Wizz Air, is covered further down.

Quick comparison: Rome airport transfer options at a glance

Before we dive into the detail, here is the short answer to the question – how to get from Rome airport to city center. The right choice depends on where you are staying, how many people are in your group, what time you arrive, and how much luggage you have.

OptionFCO FiumicinoCIA CiampinoBest for
Private transferFrom €60 (sedan) up to €81 (minivan) with Welcome PickupsFrom €55Families, late arrivals, larger groups, meet-and-greet

A short note on what has changed in 2026. The Fiumicino taxi flat rate is €55 to anywhere inside the Aurelian Walls. This was confirmed by Aeroporti di Roma, the airport authority, in their most recent published rates. Some older articles and forums still quote €50. They are out of date.

Fiumicino airport to Rome: every transfer option explained

Fiumicino airport sits 32 kilometers (around 20 miles) southwest of central Rome. Depending on the time of day and your mode of transport, the journey takes between 32 minutes and just over an hour. Traffic is at its worst during weekday commuter peak, between 17:00 and 19:00.

Private transfer from Fiumicino to Rome

A private transfer is the door-to-door option and my preferred option after a long flight. Your driver tracks your flight, meets you at arrivals with a name sign, helps with your luggage, and drives directly to your accommodation. There is no taxi rank queue, no language friction. and no fishing for cash at the end.

Traveling with my own family, this is what we book. With twins to wrangle and luggage to manage, the price difference between a taxi and a private transfer is small enough that the meet-and-greet at arrivals is worth it every time. After a long-haul flight, the moment when someone is holding a sign with your name on it is a real relief.

Our recommended provider is Welcome Pickups. Sedan transfers start from €60. A minivan for groups up to eight runs around €81. Child seats can be booked online. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup, which matters for international travelers whose plans may change. They are available 24/7 and you can easily book online.

If you want to compare options, Suntransfers offers a wider fleet for larger groups and longer cancellation windows.

Taxi from Fiumicino to Rome city center

The official Fiumicino-to-Rome taxi flat rate is €55. This applies to journeys between the airport and any address inside the Aurelian Walls, which covers most central Rome neighborhoods including Trastevere, the Vatican, Monti, and the historic center. The rate is for up to four passengers and includes luggage. Tariffs are set by the City of Rome’s mobility authority, Roma Mobilità, and the rates published at Aeroporti di Roma, the official airport authority, are the only ones you should trust. Forum posts and older travel sites still quote €50 or €48. Those numbers are out of date.

According to Aeroporti di Roma, no surcharges apply on top of the flat rate. If a driver tries to add charges for luggage, the time of day, or “extras,” they are not entitled to do so. Other useful flat rates worth knowing:

  • Fiumicino to Tiburtina station: €57
  • Fiumicino to Ostiense station: €47
  • Fiumicino to Ciampino airport (between airports): €52
  • Fiumicino to Civitavecchia cruise port: €130

How to spot an official Roman taxi. They are always white with a “TAXI” sign on the roof and a license number on the door. The license plate reads “Roma Capitale,” not “Fiumicino” — this matters, because Fiumicino-registered taxis can use the meter and end up far more expensive. If a taxi license starts with “Roma,” you are paying the fixed €55. If it starts with “Fiumicino,” walk to the next car in the rank.

Taking a Taxi from Rome Airport

When you exit baggage claim, follow the signs to the taxi rank outside Terminal 1 or Terminal 3. Wait in the official line. Do not accept rides from people who approach you inside the terminal. They are unlicensed and the price will be inflated. Aeroporti di Roma actively warns travelers about this, and we have heard from listeners caught out by it more than once.

This is the kind of detail that sounds fussy until it has cost you. Every year we hear stories from our community of someone who ended up paying nearly €90 because she got into a Fiumicino-licensed taxi that ran the meter on a route that should have been the €55 flat fare. The license plate is the giveaway. Look at it before you load your luggage.

Do taxis in Rome accept credit cards? By law, yes. Always check the machine works before starting your journey. The phrase to use is “Accettate carte di credito?” Some drivers will claim the machine is broken. If yours does, take the next taxi.

A small piece of practical advice. If paying with cash, try to pay with notes smaller than €50. Two twenties and a ten works well. Handing over a €50 note for a €55 fare and adding a coin for the rest is the cleanest way to settle the bill. There is an old trick of palming a note and saying you only paid €20. We covered this and other staying safe in Italy topics on our podcast.

Leonardo Express: the fast train from Fiumicino to Roma Termini

The Leonardo Express is the dedicated airport train. It runs non-stop between Fiumicino airport station and Roma Termini Station in 32 minutes flat. For anyone staying near Termini or transferring by train to another destination in Italy, this train is a good choice. It is efficient and clean and there is plenty of room for luggage.

If you are not staying near the station and cannot walk to your hotel, consider the additional expense and that the taxi lines at Termini can be very long. I have waited over an hour and in desperation ended up ordering a Uber Black which cost more than a transfer from the airport.

A one-way fare on the Leonardo Express is €14 per adult. Children under 4 ride free. One child aged 4 to 12 rides free with each paying adult. Groups of four can buy a Mini-groups ticket for €40 instead of €56, which is worth knowing.

According to Aeroporti di Roma, services run from 05:38 to 00:23 from Fiumicino, and from 04:50 to 23:35 from Termini. Trains depart every 15 minutes during peak times and every 30 to 45 minutes off peak. At Termini, Leonardo Express trains always arrive and depart from platforms 23 and 24, near the left-luggage office. Good to know if you have a connecting train to Florence, Venice, or Naples and need to move quickly.

Leonardo Express train at Rome Fiumicino airport platform - rome airport transfer

Ticket and Practical Information for the Leonardo Express

You can buy tickets at the Trenitalia kiosk inside Fiumicino station, at the self-service red machines, or online via Trenitalia or Omio. If you buy at a machine, you must validate the paper ticket in the green platform machines before boarding. Skip this and the on-board fine is steep. Online tickets are pre-validated.

To find the train from arrivals at Fiumicino, follow the signs marked “Treni.” The walk takes about ten minutes, with travelators and lifts along the way.

I always do a quick check of the platform display screen before walking down. Once or twice over the years a Leonardo Express service has shifted to a neighboring platform at short notice, and the trains do not announce in English. The display is the source of truth.

The official timetable is published by Trenitalia, the Italian state rail operator, and current schedules vary by season.

A note on strikes. Italy has occasional rail strikes, and they happen often enough that we wrote a full guide to managing train strikes in Italy. The Leonardo Express is classified as an essential service, so a minimum schedule is guaranteed even on strike days.

FL1 regional train: a cheaper alternative for some neighborhoods

The FL1 is the slower commuter train. It does not stop at Termini. What it does do is stop at Trastevere, Ostiense, Tuscolana, and Tiburtina, which is useful if you are staying in those neighborhoods or want to connect to Metro Line B at Piramide (a short walk from Ostiense).

A one-way ticket is €8. The service runs roughly every 15 minutes during the day, dropping to every 30 minutes on Sundays and late at night. First train is around 05:57 and the last leaves Fiumicino at 22:42.

For travelers staying in Trastevere or near Piramide, the FL1 can drop you within walking distance of your accommodation and skip the Termini transfer entirely. We rate it as the underused option for travelers in the know.

Airport bus shuttle: the budget option

Several private bus companies run direct services from Fiumicino to Roma Termini. The main operators are SIT Bus Shuttle, Terravision, T.A.M., and Cotral / ATRAL. Fares run from €5.90 to €7 one way, depending on operator and whether you book online or on the bus. Most also offer return tickets at a discount.

Journey time is around 50 to 60 minutes depending on traffic. Buses depart every 30 to 40 minutes. The first services start around 05:30 and the last run is around 23:00. Most buses go to Termini, with some operators (SIT especially) also stopping at Via Crescenzio near the Vatican, which is useful if you are staying in that area.

The bus stops are outside Terminal 3. Follow the signs from arrivals. Allow extra time during peak season — May through September and Easter — when queues can build up. Booking online is the easy way to avoid both the queue and the risk of a sold-out bus.

A note on local public buses. Some maps show local Rome bus services running between the airport and the city. We do not recommend them. They are slow, crowded, and have no proper luggage space. Stick to the dedicated airport shuttle services or the train.

Ciampino airport to Rome: every transfer option

Ciampino airport (CIA) is 16 kilometers from central Rome and serves mostly low-cost carriers like Ryanair and Wizz Air. The journey to the city center takes around 30 to 50 minutes by road. There is no direct train from the airport itself, which surprises some first-time visitors. The good news is that the airport is small, simple to navigate, and the transfer options are clear.

Taxi from Ciampino airport to Rome

The official taxi flat rate from Ciampino into central Rome (within the Aurelian Walls) is €40. Like Fiumicino, this covers up to four passengers and luggage, and it applies regardless of the time of day.

The same caveats apply. Use the official white taxi rank only. Look for “Roma Capitale” on the license, not “Ciampino.” Some Ciampino-licensed drivers refuse the flat fare and insist on running the meter, which is not legal for the airport-to-center route. If you have problems, the FREENow app lets you call a licensed taxi without dealing with the rank.

Private transfer from Ciampino

A private transfer from Ciampino starts at around €55. The booking and meet-and-greet process is identical to Fiumicino, and the journey is shorter — typically 30 to 40 minutes door to door depending on traffic and your end destination. We use Welcome Pickups for Ciampino transfers as well, for the same reasons we use them at Fiumicino.

Bus from Ciampino to Roma Termini

The Ciampino airport shuttle bus to Termini is the most popular budget option. Tickets are €7 one way, with children under 4 traveling free. The journey takes around 40 minutes. Buses run from early morning until around 22:30, with departures every 30 to 40 minutes.

Stops are outside the arrivals terminal at Bus Stop 1. As with Fiumicino, book online to avoid queues, especially in peak season.

Ciampino Airlink: the combined bus and train

The Ciampino Airlink is an official combined service. A short bus ride takes you from the airport to Ciampino railway station, where you connect to a regional train into Roma Termini. Tickets are €2.70 each way, which makes it the cheapest option from this airport.

The catch is the connections. The bus runs less frequently than the trains, and the total journey time can stretch to an hour or more depending on how the timing works out. For travelers comfortable with public transport and not in a rush, it is a clear winner on price.

Which Rome airport transfer is right for you

After a flight, the right transfer depends less on the cheapest option and more on your situation. Here is a simple framework.

For travelers staying near Termini or with an onward journey by train: Take the Leonardo Express. It is the fastest, most reliable, and is cheaper than a taxi for one or two people once you account for the fare per person.

For travelers arriving after a long flight, families with children or large groups: Book a private transfer. The cost per person is comparable to the train, you get help with luggage, child seats are available, and there is no need to wrangle suitcases through Termini after a long flight.

For groups of three or four with luggage: A standard taxi is the most cost-effective option. The €55 flat rate divided across the group works out cheaper than four separate train tickets, and you go directly to your hotel.

For travelers on a tight budget: Take the airport shuttle bus. €7 to Termini is hard to beat. Allow extra time and pack your patience for the queue at peak season.

For travelers staying in Trastevere, Ostiense, or near Piramide: The FL1 regional train drops you closer to your accommodation than Termini does, and the ticket is cheaper than the Leonardo Express.

For travelers connecting to Civitavecchia cruise port or onward train travel: Take the Leonardo Express to Termini, then your onward connection. Termini is the main hub for high-speed trains to Florence, Venice, Milan, and Naples.

Late-night arrivals and early-morning departures from Fiumicino

spanish steps rome in early morning

If your flight arrives after 23:30 or departs before 05:30, your options narrow significantly.

The Leonardo Express runs until 00:23 from Fiumicino. After that, the train is not an option until services resume at 05:38.

Official taxis remain at the rank 24 hours a day. The €55 flat rate applies regardless of the time. There is no legitimate “night surcharge” on the flat fare to central Rome.

For a 04:00 departure or a 02:00 arrival, a pre-booked private transfer is usually the cleanest option. Your driver waits regardless of delays. There is no risk of arriving to find the rank empty or no buses running.

I arrived into Fiumicino on New Year’s Day in 2025 and the airport was busier than I expected for a public holiday morning. Even at off-peak times, the official taxi rank can move slowly during major holidays and the start of school holiday weeks. If you are landing on a date like that, a pre-booked transfer is a smart investment. There is no waiting in line. There is no fumbling with directions. Your driver is there.

If you have a very early flight, consider an airport hotel for the night before. We have a full guide to the best hotels near Rome airport covering both Fiumicino and Ciampino, including hotels with shuttle service to the terminal.

Uber and ride-share apps in Rome

Uber has a limited presence in Italy. In Rome, only Uber Black (the premium service) is widely available, and it is more expensive than an official taxi. There is no Uber X service.

The local equivalent is the FREENow app, which connects you with the official Roman taxi network. It works much the way Uber does. You can track the driver, save your payment details, and skip the cash exchange. We use it ourselves when needing a taxi anywhere in central Rome.

For airport transfers specifically, ride-share apps are rarely better value than the flat-rate taxi or a pre-booked private transfer.
